When we begin to practice daily mindfulness, we should also be devoted to becoming a more positive person. This means having an optimistic outlook on life, being grateful for what we have and being able to live life in the present moment.
Have you ever met someone who is so negative, that they begin to make everything around them look worse, and make you feel worse about things as well? This way of thinking can be so influential to you and those around you. It can make the world seem like a dark and dangerous place.
Now think about someone you know who is a tirelessly positive person. They are mindful, optimistic and able see the good in every situation. A real glass-half-full thinker. It’s inspiring! It rubs off, and makes everyone around them think “how can I be a better person?”.
So why are each of these people so influential? It all starts with the basics. The simple words they use everyday, their vocabulary. Neuroscientists have proven that the words we use affect the way we feel, and the way we feel guides our entire outlook on life. So how do you become a more positive person? Be mindful of your vocabulary and change your words!
Here are two quick and easy changes you can make to your everyday vocabulary that will help you become that positive person everyone wants to be around.
One word to ADD to your vocabulary:
Jake Ducey is the young author of a fantastic book call ‘The Purpose Principles’ in which he draws on the wisdom and experience of highly successful people as inspiration and guidance that anyone can use. In the chapter titled ‘Thoughts Become Things’ he says “We say if. A highly effective person never uses the word if. Instead they use as or when.”
If we are mindful, we can see that these two words have a great influence on our ability to live up to our potential. Using the word if automatically sets in place the possibility of a negative outcome. When looking at a situation, we must become a positive person, we must leave room only for the opportunity of success.
Replacing the word if with when opens the door to opportunity. It changes the way our brain sees a situation. We become an optimistic person and begin to see potential for success rather than problems. This leads us to the next word; problem.
One word to SUBTRACT from your vocabulary:
In Ducey’s book, he draws on advice from ‘Words Can Change Your Brain’ a book which provides strategies for changing our speech in order to better communicate. Authors Newberg and Waldman suggest eliminating the word problem from your vocabulary on the basis that “it invokes stress and fear”. They suggest mindfully replacing it with words like challenge or situation which allow your mind to focus on creating positive outcomes.
The word problem tends to has a negative connotation that automatically creates pessimistic emotions in us. It begins a downward spiral of negativity. When we use mindfulness to make this small substitution, our outlook on situations can completely change. Using the words challenge or situation allow us to focus on more optimistic thoughts and generally be a more positive person. And when our emotions are positive we are more successful!
